NUS clinches 14th spot in inaugural Nature Asia-Pacific Publishing Rankings 2009

NUS has attained the 14th place in the inaugural Nature Asia-Pacific Publishing Rankings 2009, based on the newly established Nature Asia-Pacific Publishing Index. The Index ranks institutions and countries in the Asia-Pacific region (including India and Australasia) according to the number of primary research articles published in the prestigious Nature journals. NUS is the only university in Singapore to have made it to the top 15.

From toxins to therapeutics

The team led by Prof Manjunatha Kini of the NUS Department of Biological Sciences has found Haditoxin, a novel protein in the venom of the King Cobra (Ophiophagus hannah), offers great potential as a lead compound for understanding and treating a variety of neurological and neurodegenerative diseases which include Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, depression, anxiety and addiction to nicotine.

Prof Kofi Annan calls on NUS

At a lunch hosted in his honour at NUS, Prof Kofi Annan, first Li Ka Shing Professor of the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy (LKYSPP) and former Secretary-General of the United Nations, said that he was particularly impressed with the work being done by students in Singapore.

Singapore scientists discover new synthetic strategy to control ultra-small luminescent nanocrystals

Singapore scientists from NUS, the Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR), NTU and King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) have discovered a new synthetic strategy for controlling the properties of ultra-small luminescent nanocrystals. Their findings have been published in the prestigious Nature journal on 25 February 2010.

Dean of Duke-NUS Graduate Medical School receives award from The American College of Psychiatrists

Prof Ranga R. Krishnan, Dean of Duke-NUS Graduate Medical School, was presented with the Award for Research in Geriatric Psychiatry by The American College of Psychiatrists at its Annual Meeting held in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, in February this year.

Prof Kofi Annan speaks on past lessons and future ambitions of Asia and Africa

The divergent paths of Africa and Asia are a much studied subject. At his first public lecture delivered in his capacity as the inaugural Li Ka Shing Professor of the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy (LKYSPP), Prof Kofi Annan expounded on how Africa can learn from the approach and success of Asia and how to build a more effective partnership for the benefit of everyone.

Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music Abigail Sin named region's first Young Steinway Artist

A winner of an unprecedented number of international piano competitions, Ms Abigail Sin from the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music (YSTCM) has been named the region’s first Young Steinway Artist. She is the first of such artist in Singapore and South East Asia, joining the pool of 13 Young Steinway Artists around the world.

National University Cancer Institute officially opens

The National University Cancer Institute, Singapore was officially launched by Guest-of-Honour Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong.

NUS launches research boat 'The Galaxea'

NUS can now boast of its own research vessel 'The Galaxea'. Launched on 6 February 2010 , the 12m by 5m boat will be shared by the Tropical Marine Science Institute (TMSI) and the NUS Department of Biological Sciences.

Eight NUS research projects receive proof-of-concept grants from the National Research Foundation

The National Research Foundation (NRF) awarded the Proof-of-Concept (POC) grants to eight projects from NUS, out of a total of 10 projects from the institutes of higher learning (IHLs). S$75 million has been set aside for this purpose under the NRF’s POC Scheme and the 10 project teams will each receive up to S$250,000 to develop their inventions into prototypes, bringing them closer to commercialisation.

Passing of distinguished NUS alumnus Dr Chee Phui Hung

Dr Chee Phui Hung, former president of the Medical Alumni Association, passed away on 14 February 2010 at the age of 87.

NUS alumnus wins 2010 SME Richard E. Morley Outstanding Young Manufacturing Engineer Award

Mr Mervyn Fathianathan, an NUS alumnus, is one of this year’s recipients of the Society of Manufacturing Engineers Richard E. Morley Outstanding Young Manufacturing Award in recognition of exceptional contributions and accomplishments in the manufacturing industry.
